The word orange derives from the Sanskrit word for "orange tree." The orange is not a wild fruit and even though oranges have been available for centuries and even though the exact origin is unknown it is believed to have originated in China. Oranges come in a variety of shapes and sizes and have been appreciated for their taste and health benefits. There are many different types of oranges available such as navel, mandarin, cara cara, blood oranges, Valencia and Seville oranges just to name a few. Some are very sweet and others have more of a sour taste.

In addition, according to the American Heart Association (AHA), eating higher amounts of a compound found in citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruit may lower ischemic stroke risk for women. Those who ate the highest amounts of citrus had a 19 percent lower risk of ischemic stroke than women who consumed the least (R).
The majority of oranges grown in the US are from Florida in temperate climates.
